I was born in Annapolis, MD and am still happily living here now. After graduating at the top of my class at Maryland Institute College of Art, I worked in sign shops and learned the art of sign lettering and then ventured out on my own focusing on boat lettering around the Chesapeake Bay. I was also hired to do wall murals and over time the wall murals became my primary source of work.
Many of these murals combined my skills as a sign painter along with fine art painting skills. Starbucks, Graduate Hotels, and Glory Days Restaurants are clients that hire me for both skills and they have sent me to do murals all over the east coast and as far west as Ohio. Many recent clients, Ernest Maier Block Company in Bladensburg MD, Ginger Cove Retirement Community in Annapolis MD, Murphy’s Oil Company in Pasadena MD, Lighthouse Art Center in Tequesta, Florida to name just a few, hired me based on my painting skills. Also, I have done two commissioned murals in Portugal and one in Spain, all based on fine art painting skills.
Along with maintaining a professional mural and sign painter career, I am constantly building a portfolio of oil paintings on canvas. In 2002, I started a local art group called Art Between the Creeks where I’ve invited artists who haven’t had a chance to show their work before, and after 20 years we are still in business. This gives me (and the other artists) a reason and a deadline to create and complete new work. As a result, I have a healthy series of large exciting oil paintings, most of which have sold to private collectors. I have been included in many group shows outside of Art Between the Creeks including one in New York City, and several solo exhibitions in Annapolis MD, the latest were at MD Hall, Quiet Waters Park, and at Jo Fleming’s Contemporary Art Gallery.
As much as I pour myself into my work, I also love my adventurous life which has involved heavy air windsurfing, ocean sailing, boat building and much climbing among scaffolding. In 1988, I married Robert Holden, a professional sailor and sailmaker, and in 2011, we sailed our boat, which is also our home, across the Atlantic Ocean, to Europe and Africa, and back. I continued my work along the way creating a series of small paintings, and hosting a few art shows and completing two murals. I also wrote a book called “The Most Excellent Adventures of Tenacity” and authored many magazine articles that chronicle the two-year adventure. Slide show talks about this trip brought the sailing and art community out in big numbers into packed venues.
Besides sailing, Robert and I are also trained ice dancers and though we aren’t actively competing now, (too much work to find practice time!!) we still take our skating seriously and train when we can, often
skating in exhibitions.
